Tuesday, we went walking in the Rosengarten (a park), Emily had her last reading with Fabienne (who is going on Vacation, but will be back in time for the follow-up team). I signed up a new reader at the last party (our first male reader, hooray!). His name is Fouad, he is from Morocco, and he is a co-worker of Kai (our house parent). He is also a computer scientist (which means he thinks my dorky jokes are funny, so we get along well).
On Wednesday we had our "Mexican" party (which means we ate "burritos" (which means flour tortilla look-alikes + chopped lettuce + chopped tomato + ground meat with taco seasoning that was imported by yours truly + swiss-y mozzarella-y cheese because we couldn't find cheddar + fake salsa + Taco bell hot sauce packets imported by Emily)). We did the best with what we had, and it was pretty yummy- our most successful and fun party I'd say. I just hope no one actually visits Mexico (I might have said "Hasta la pasta Mufasa" a few times). We also had "Mexican Wedding cookies" (which are those little powdered balls you see every once and a while) and we officially pronounced Emily the Cookie Queen of Germany. Among our attendees were: some church members, some of our readers, some members from the Tuesday night Playgroup, and Ben and Spencer (the follow up team dynamic duo), a total of 17 grown-ups and two toddlers.
Thursday we only had two readers, so we went souvenir shopping and got caught in a freak rainstorm.
Friday we joined a scrapbooking party hosted by Bri. I made a rainbow out of (and subsequently scarfed) a bunch of M&Ms (Purple probably feels bad that it was left out of the original M&M colors. I had to use brown as a substitute). We spent a lot of talking about the differences between German and American culture. Specifically regarding "dating." What is dating? What is prom? Why are there so many rules? Is the guy supposed to call the girl? When we (Americans) say "I'll call you," why does it mean "I won’t call you."? Emily and I had an interesting time trying to explain the differences between "dating," "going on dates," "seeing someone," going steady," "being serious." I'm pretty sure I don't know either. I think the general consensus was that it all seemed very silly. We got back after 1:00 AM and collapsed into bed. That night Emily dreamed she was sorting her trash six different ways (Eastern Germans are very careful with their resources and very thorough with their recycling; it puts the "Go Green" trend to shame).
The next day we went with some church members to meet the traveling singing group from Oklahoma Christian University. We ate lunch at a castle. Cool, huh?
The song of the week is "It's gonna be me" by N*Sync. Now, before berating the cheesy teeny-bopper love song, read the lyrics. This is God talking to me, and the rest of the world:
"You might been hurt, babe, that ain't no lie. You've seen them all come and go. I remember you told me that it made you believe in "No man, no cry;" maybe that's why every little thing I do never seems enough for you. You don't want to lose it again, but I'm not like them. Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what? It's gonna be me.
You got no choice, babe, but to move on. You know, there ain't no time to waste. You're just too blind to see, but in the end, you know, it's gonna be me. You can't deny, so just tell me why every little thing I do never seems enough for you. You don't want to lose it again, but I'm not like them. Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what? It's gonna be me.
There comes a day when I'll be the one, you'll see- it's gonna be me.
All that I do is not enough for you. I don't want to lose it, but I'm not like that. When finally you get to Love, guess what? It's gonna be me.
Every little thing I do never seems enough for you. You don't want to lose it again, but I'm not like them. Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what? It's gonna be me."
Love you all,
Abby and Emily
